Winter on Mallorca

Winter in Mallorca is a time for relaxation for our Wind & Friends team. However, not everyone leaves our island after the Wind & Friends season ends. At the end of the season, many people ask about the weather and water conditions in winter. Today, we’d like to introduce you to this cooler side of the heart of the Balearic Islands. Mallorca is a water sports destination not only in summer but also attracts many sailing, wingfoiling, and windsurfing enthusiasts in winter.

It’s the latter, windsurfing, that’s very popular in Mallorca. Winter here is a time of strong winds, often blowing from the north or northwest (Tramuntana, Mestral). These winds bring with them rain, cool air, and temperatures in Mallorca often drop below 10 degrees Celsius. As the temperature drops, the wind speed increases, with gusts exceeding 30 knots. Such weather forecasts, while not encouraging for walks around Mallorca, are encouraging for every windsurfing enthusiast, especially Wind & Friends windsurfers. Due to the direction of the Mestral and Tramuntana winds, the best spot for windsurfing is the popular Es Barcares in the Bay of Pollença. When the wind blows from the north, Alcudia Bay, where our Wind & Friends water sports base is located, also offers excellent conditions for windsurfing enthusiasts.

Mallorca, as one of the three Balearic Islands, is also swept by the Ponient wind during the winter, which blows from the southwest. The warm, pleasant current of strong but more constant air is undoubtedly favored by the island’s natives, who are accustomed to warm air. To enjoy the Ponient wind, we head south and visit famous windsurfing spots in Mallorca, such as Can Pastilla or Sa Rapita. The former is a true mecca for windsurfers. The Ponient typically blows continuously for several days and is so stable that the bays in southern Mallorca are full of windsurfing boards on these days.

So, if you’ve ever considered visiting Mallorca between November and April to try water sports like windsurfing, wingfoiling, or even sailing, you certainly won’t be disappointed. The weather in Mallorca during this period can be unstable, with some less pleasant, rainy days occurring, so it’s worth checking the forecast before your planned trip to ensure optimal weather and wind conditions. Our Wind & Friends water sports school, although temporarily closed, encourages you to visit Mallorca in winter, and our team is always happy to help and provide you with any information you need. Therefore, if you have any questions about winter in Mallorca and water sports, you can contact us any time of year.

In our next post, we’ll also introduce you to a few interesting places we often visit when it doesn’t “blow” in Mallorca. Maybe you’ll even join us?
