Windsurfing – safety rules
Windsurfing is one of the water sports that we learn throughout our lives. As we develop our skills, new opportunities open up that diversify this sport. However, with growing experience, we are able to better take advantage of emerging windsurfing opportunities. Windsurfing is an individual sport that we often learn on our own. And although it is great fun and loved by many water sports enthusiasts, you must remember certain rules to make it not only pleasant but also safe. This time we would like to present you our 5 most important safety rules.
Windsurfing – rule 1 – “Spot”
No matter what level of advancement we are at, always check the spot we are going to carefully. Depending on whether it is a lake, sea or ocean, you will need to check about tides, currents, shoals, quays, swimming areas and prohibited areas. We can obtain such information on the Internet at water sports stations or in nearby marinas or ports.
Windsurfing – rule 2 – “Weather”
Anyone going windsurfing should first check the weather forecast. It mainly determines whether windsurfing will be possible on that day. Weather conditions depend mainly on the climate, season and place where we windsurf. Due to the weather, Majorca is an ideal place for windsurfing. We do not go out on the water in case of unstable weather, e.g. when rain is forecast or there is a threat of a storm. It is also important to check the water and air temperature to know whether you will need, for example, a neoprene wetsuit, and in even colder conditions, shoes, hats and gloves.
Windsurfing – rule 3 – “Wind”
Every windsurfer knows that the most important and necessary thing in this sport is the wind. It depends on him in which direction we sail and whether it is possible at all. But that’s not all. The wind can also be variable or unstable. Wind power can suddenly increase, causing strong gusts that can be dangerous for beginners and windsurfing equipment. Skillful handling of the wind requires a lot of experience, so before going out on the water, it is always worth checking the wind conditions to make windsurfing a pleasure for us and not a fight for survival. Fortunately, Majorca with its moderate wind creates optimal conditions for doing it.
Windsurfing – rule 4 – “Equipment”
Poorly fitting equipment makes windsurfing not only difficult, but also dangerous. Both the board and the rig should be appropriately adjusted to the wind conditions, windsurfing style and, above all, the person’s skills. In addition, it is important to carefully check the technical condition of our equipment to avoid unpleasant incidents on the water. Every element of our gear should be checked and made sure that there are no tears, holes or cracks. We check the sail, mast, boom, sheets , board, etc.
Rule five – “don’t go alone”
In our opinion, the most important rule. And this applies not only to windsurfing, but also to every kind of water activity such as sailing, wingfoiling, kayaking and SUP. In principle, every time you go out on the water you should be accompanied by other people. Remember that unexpected situations may occur on the water, and when we have company, we can always count on help. And if no one is with us, just leave information about where we are and what we are doing. Our Wind & Friends water sports school is such a place, where you can always get assistance and good care. And our team will take care of your safety on the water!
